Some years ago I made a z3 2.8 gear lever fit the m3. Involved putting a bend in it to match the stock shifter. If you look carefully you will see that the distance from the pivot point to the very end is much longer than factory shifter. This is what gives it the short shift.

I have compared this to the 540 and the 330d short shifter and this is far far better. Only reason its not as popular is because the extra work involved in bending it.

This particular shifter is 115 euro part to buy vs the 70 euro 540i shifter.
There is a nice difference between them. I personally preferred this option over the 540 when I tried them both out.
