If reliability is top of the list, Civic 1.8 seems to come highly recommended if you can get on with the ride quality.

Otherwise A4 1.8TFSI is worth a look - €636 on cc or €570 on new system.

Skoda Octavia/Superb with the 1.8 TSI is also €570

If you have a better budget, as Dergside says the choice opens up when you go up the years a bit - you'll have to go to the UK though.
Something like an IS300h should fit the bill:

I had a 2008 1.8 TFSI A4 Sport, the sport spec sits between the SE and S Line, some nice extras on it like the Xenon's (a must for this model A4) and half leather interior, 3 spoke wheel etc, it was a fine car and good on petrol, 40ish mpg is doable. €570 tax and insurance was reasonable. I went from a GTi to this and didn't find it massively lacking in power. The only thing i didn't like about it was the clutch pedal was offset too far to the left, didn't make for the best seating position.

I was in your shoes a while ago, had enough of performance cars for a while so just wanted a nice runabout. Ended up in a 07 325I Coupe. Got it very cheap for the car it is just because of the ''high'' tax.

All in all its been a great daily for over 6 months now never any problems with it and its a lovely place to be while still retaining a bit of sportiness. That said the one thing that i have noticed is it is a thirsty b*stard of a thing when it wants to be. I average 25mpg in it which would definatly be something Id be more concerned about if I did big mileage.

I looked at 1.8t A5s before i bought and while they seem like good cars i couldn't bring myself to go back driving FWDs, if you've had a string of Beemers it may be worth considering that point.

If it's a truely family wagon with a bit of fizz that you're looking for, this vRS petrol estate seems like it's worth a look - low mileage, full history and acres of room. Not quite the 'low tax' but reasonable all the same....
