Recommend a post 08 petrol car

Looking for a daily petrol car - any make. Cheap tax bracket. Something around 1.8 or 2 litre as well. No GTI type models

For example a 08 E90 320i fits the bill so far in that €390 tax 47mpg ( I know take with a pinch of salt) and 177bhp

I dont want a petrol/diesel debate or a discussion on which cars are crap or have X problems

Just post what alternatives to the E90 320i I could consider

    Thanks

Interesting one there Eamo. Choices in this country will be limited because of the dreaded CO2 based VRT and the mass exodus to diesel. On that basis, and on the assumption that you wouldn't have objections to a trip across the sea, there are a few obvious suggestions. VRT may not be your friend in getting any of them home because of rate rather than value. I'm assuming that you probably don't want road tax of greater than the €390 (sub 156g/km) you've mentioned and something in the 2008-2011 range of years. The newer, the more likely you will be to get more modest CO2, as the EU5 capable models started appearing from 2009.

    Some ideas:

    BMW 116i - e87
    Ford Focus 1.6 - '11 model - pre '11 shape in higher CO2 category.
Honda Civic 1.8 vtec - need to be cautious as 2008-ish can be either side of 155g/km depending on model.
    Mini Countryman (2wd) - Cooper, not S.
    Kia Sportage ('10 on)
Nissan Juke and Quaskai (can't spell it as I've never had the slightest interest in one )
    Toyota Avensis - '09 on

    Not sure if this helps........

If you could find an Irish 325i (so you save on VRT), that'll fall into the €570 bracket (not too bad) and decent bit of clout at 214bhp! Think thats about the best comprised for a petrol 2008

Guessing you want a saloon, but as an example - https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sal...x-570/17941774

LOL, and as it turns out, the car above was in with myself before the new year for a freshen up...he didnt say he was moving it on, at the time he was saying its a keeper! PM if you are thinking of looking at it and I can give you some info!

Man that 325 is cheap... I would definitely consider a 116i, I would have a tidy 3 door M-Sport in a heartbeat, not a fast car but they’re so much fun. But of course it’s hard to ignore a 3.0 litre straight 6 €570 a year tax proposition...

I’m guessing from the OP that he’s looking for something more modest and suited to a family workhorse role? While a 325i might not qualify as a GTI, it definitely doesn’t fit in the 1.8-2.0 guidance!

Eamo would need no advice on buying anything with 6 or more cylinders. He’s had more than his share of tasty motors through the years
