Nürburgring trip

Evening all. I’m heading over to Germany in July to have a little mini driving holiday. I’m picking up an i8 roadster in Frankfurt and I’m going to drive around the Rhine Valley. I’m also going to spend at least one day at the Nürburgring and was hoping that someone here may have some tips on how to get the most out of it. Obviously Sixt are going to look down on me driving their 180 grand hire car on the ring so I am planning on renting something more suitable for when I get there. There isn’t a huge amount of choice and prices seem to be relatively high but I’m hoping somebody here might be able to recommend a place where they had personal experience.

If you have any tips or info that you think might help on the ring and the surrounding areas I’d really appreciate it.

I am going over to goodwood festival in July then driving over to the Ring for a couple laps. So definitely want to hear people opinions on what to check out?

Also any tips on prep.

I was over 4 weeks ago and going back again the first week of August. I brought my own car over though so of no help to you.

Did you stay near the ring or visit any interesting place nearby? I’m looking for info on the general area as well as the best place to get a car.

Stayed in the Dorint hotel which is overlooking the GP circuit, very nice hotel and could spend a half hour every evening walking around the underground carpark checking out the cars. We were supposed to head down to Stuttgart to check out the Mercedes and Porsche museums but we were enjoying the ring too much so cancelled that. There seems to be a serious selection of cars that can be rented nearby so you won't be stuck for choice!

Has anyone got insurance for the ring to drive their car? I know couple german companies are offering it but not sure should i get it or leave it?

If you crash, then the cost can spiral outta control..
