    what year is the car?

It's easy enough to do with a heat gun, otherwise time and a bit of patience, I've done it 5 times now and its quite easy.

Buy the new rubber seals that are on the top of the lamp that perish and have them polished while they're out.

Is it possible to split the 02 onward Hella's? I've a late build E39 that I intend polishing the lens on - however if I've the unit out I'd replace the adjusters as they've been broken for years, but always pass the test, so I've left well alone to date.

They pass the test cause you can't fail an NCT on headlights being too low.

It's 03 on that I think you'll be ok the fence. Easy way to find out is to remove the lower trim, you'll see some of the glue exposed. If it's soft, you're in luck, if it's hard forget it.

Mine is 03 and has the hard glue so I cut the headlights open to reach the adjusters. I glued the panel I cut out back on on them afterwards. Actually I didn’t glue in the big panel I cut out on the bottom of one of the lights and it only fogs up the odd time after a car wash, never in the rain.

If you are trying to run an E39 cheaply its a good solution.

    Thanks guys,

In the end I just ordered a new headlight - mine are from 08 according to the build date so I wouldn't be able to bake them open.
