Petrol and diesel ban on new sales from 2030. Be interesting to see how that will work out.
Not gonna happen. Even in 50 years. Serious lack of understanding of the scale of infrastructure required to power all cars if everyone went electric, never mind actually generating this electricity. The minister should be sacked and put away as far as possible from decision making process for being this dumb. Scary to think these are the people who are in charge of legislations.

I think you're right. Would the planned interconnect to France provide the power generation requirement? Personally I think nuclear is the way to go anyway, especially the upcoming GEN6, but no new plants are being built and they take decades to get from planning to completion. The supply side of it may be feasible when you can recharge at home, but a large majority of people living in cities dont have that luxury. What about people that do mega miles? Long commutes, sales people etc? At the moment a model 3 is the one of the few EVs that can fufill the range requiremnt of my daily commute, they aint cheap though!

Batteries tech will improve, but its incremental and I dont belive there will be an enormous increase in capacity within the next decade. Unless a serious investment is made in infrastructure this plan is wishful thinking.

The other obvious lack of joined up thinking.....they state that 30-45% of cars will be electric but in the same breath they say “don’t worry, we will ensure that all new builds will have at least 10% of spaces fitted with electric charging points......massive doh!

Don't be naive - minister knows full well that this is unfeasible, but has to have some proposal to keep the green agenda and the Eurocrats off his/her (delete as appropriate as ministers come & go) back....

Remember, no matter what way you look at it, Capitalism & Environmentalism can't exist side-by-side....

By 2030 M cars and other performance cars will probably all have 3-cylinder turbocharged engines, so this is probably for the best...

700MW from France interconnect will be good to charge 100k maybe 200k cars. We have something like 2 million vehicles on the roads.

Battery tech will surely improve, and long distance ev travel will be possible with more availability of fast chargers and cars supporting them (you can add ~250km of range in 15 mins). But the main issue will be where all this electricity will come from.

I am not sure if people know SmokingTyre guy on you tube, Mat Farah. He was on JRE talking about how he is currently building storage facility in LA and basically the challenges going electric, in terms in charging points and electricity. Thats in a context of LA, where Tesla is essentially based and does all trials. Politicians needs something abstract to cling on to wave it as pretense to mask their inability to solve current problems with long term solutions.

Haven’t read anything in detail yet but the main thing coming out of this to hit drivers seems to be bigger annual carbon tax increases. The proposal of banning new petrol/diesel car registrations in 2030 was already introduced by the last government so nothing new, the only difference being it’s probably even less likely to be possible now given the backwards economic steps 2020 will bring.

“The OECD was of the view that Ireland should consider congestion charges. It was outlined that congestion charges should not be seen as a charge on all private vehicles, rather it is to make drivers pay for the negative externalities they are producing.”

Of course. Won’t make a bit of difference to climate change because we have no public transport system that’s fit for purpose so everyone will still need to drive, but at least we’ll make people poorer.

“The level of taxation on conventional cars is also insufficient to encourage a shift to EVs.”

Yeah to be fair if there’s one thing we can all agree on it’s that road tax in Ireland is too low. You could also try encouraging people to switch by lowering taxes more on EVs, but that would result in making less people poorer.
