    Big engine post-2008 cars with <225 co2

    Hi,

I noticed on a recent trawl through AutoTrader that some of the newer AMG models seem to be listed as having emissions lower than 225 g/km co2 and would therefore only fall within the second highest tax band in Ireland. For example the most recent SLK 55 AMG apparently gets 195g/km and the S65 AMG somehow gets 197g/km from a 6 litre V12. These figures are quoted from AutoTrader but I presume they are based on official figures.

I had always resigned myself to the fact that if I wanted a big engine (>3 litre) car and wanted to avoid the highest tax band I was stuck with getting something pre-2008, but this would change things...

Is anyone aware of any other post-2008 cars with big engines that manage to get these sorts of emissions figures?

I thought the M2 & M4 avoided the highest band too?

Oh they do, but I suppose I wasn't including them as they are "only" 3.0...

Apparently the new RS6 just about scrapes it into this band too:

M4 and the amgs have been redone with wltp and are now over the 225 so full whack! E63s wagon from 2017/2018 would do nicely

WLTP will shake things up quite a bit, not just for these 'bahn stormers. I'm not sure if people realize just how much most cars emissions figures are going by under the new standard. The question is, will the VRT/Road Tax authorities pick up on this and set different rates for EU6 and earlier EU standards against post WLTP cars?

I honestly don't think they will.. yet anyway. That would cause major disruption amongst the sea of diesel owners who only pay sub €200 tax for their cars.

    I've never heard of WLTP.

Just to clarify, this will only apply to new cars going forward, not retrospectively?

The 981 Cayman S with the PDK box fits in the €750 a year tax bracket. Pretty impressive for a 3.4 petrol
