Vibration dampers keep failing -E60

Hi all,

What would be causing my vibration damper / crankshaft pulleys to fail?

I replaced it less than 2 years ago with a febi part. A few months later it disintegrated, I repacked it with a SNR one from micksgarage whirl waiting for the warranty claim on the febi one. Now 7 months on its on the way out. Plenty of movement in it, no much noise but it’s causing the car to vibrate at idle when stopped in drive(not in neutral)

The only thing I did to the engine lately was replace an injector that was out of limits on the INPA rough running test. Now it’s sweet, all in green.

Any thoughts?

Edit: forgot to say it’s 2007 E60 520d, early LCI with M47tu engine.

I think there is a known PUMA case relating to the alternator going out of line on the e60/e63. That caused problems with belt tensioners on my M6

I wouldn't have much faith in Febi parts. I'd say it's worth going genuine.

Thanks, but only lasting a few months??

Also the SNR(NTN) part is having a similar problem now making me think there’s an underlying issue with the car rather than cheap quality parts.

It's hardly a release bearing on the clutch that is failing? Just wondering why it doesn't vibrate in neutral.

I’ve had similar faults with both brands and always ended up fitting genuine. About a year or two ago when you got the Febi TVD pulleys they where genuine ones with the BMW logo ground off but lately that has changed (and so has the quality).

I doubt it’s anything else at fault other than the pulley itself.

Afaik the value line kit bmw do for it is about 350-400 which is great considering what your getting (no.2 in the link).

I just rang FK and they want 460 for the kit unfortunately. I`ll look around cos if i find one for 350-400 then that would quite decent as you say, lots included for the price.

Just a thought, My water pump will need replacement soon, the bearing is too free and sounding a little rough but not excessive. this would hardly be enough to throw off the TVD ?
I replaced the tensioner pulley a while back too so that's ok.

Also, my setup doesn't use a tensioner for the A/c belt and i've always thought it seems odd.. there is a lot of tension on the belt when fitted and fitting it by slipping onto the pulley and turning over the crank seems to temporarily put a lot on tension on it.

Water pump should have little effect on the tvd.

Yeah your car uses a stretch type belt for the AC pump, common enough. It is a lot of tension on a small belt.

Update,
Coming up to Christmas, €400 is a bit of a dent in the finances. So...

I’ve discovered that Corteco is/was the OE supplier to BMW. I then compared online pics of Corteco TVDs to the original one from the car dated 2007.
They are identical, even down to the same casting marks and codes on the rear.

I’ve ordered a kit including new bolt. Guys on rover forums swear by them on the M47R engines they use... reports of several years without issue.
