Talking Euro Hoon 2020 - Automotive Events - EPIC Driving Roads

    Alright Folks!

2020 is the year this is going to happen, I'm trying to plan the mother of all driving holidays. Pure, distilled motoring pleasure!

Any input is welcome here - especially that from personal experience. Once I nail a route down and actually do it, I can give some feedback / tweak it a bit and perhaps it could become a "BMWHaus Hoon Trip Template" for anybody considering doing the same in the future.

    A few points:

    1. I will be going alone (or potentially with a couple of other cars), but crucially no kids, other halves nor their luggage (nor the need to entertain them!).

    2. I'm thinking 8 nights / 9 days in total (week off work).

    3. As little motorway as possible, I know this is a necessary evil, but the less of it the better.

    4. This being essentially an extended hoon with only stops for basic human survival (eating / sleeping), top priority here is the roads - think mountain passes, lovely twisty backroads with nice road surface that have little traffic due to new motorways or the like.

    5. Apart from stops for eating and sleeping, would be great to incorporate things like car factory/museum visits depending on the route, and automotive events (Geneva / Goodwood etc..) although I do realise this would also depend on the time of year.

With the above in mind, any suggestions?

French countryside, Austria and Switzerland are excellent.

Germany is really busy now, you need to be up very early or out very late to enjoy the road network, wouldn't be high on my list of places to go anymore.

I'd recommend aiming for the Picos, Dolomites, or South of Mont Blanc into Tuscany.

Stelvio is hit or miss, it's often really badly surfaced or snowed in.

Hands down the one of the most fun places for roads I've been is Corsica and you could easily spend a week there.

Don't know about Switzerland, don't fancy going to jail. I don't really care about autobahnns either, they're still motorways

Corsica looks stunning but seems like it might be better suited to motorbikes?

France, Austria, Italy, maybe a bit of Germany sounds good for sure. I wanted to do the Grossglockner in Austria for a long time.

    Where is the Picos? Spain?

So something along the lines of this?

That route would have the added benefit of Munich and Stuttgart on the way

It is. Had a rental there for a week or two many years ago. Some great roads, including some good corkscrew roads, and stunning scenery, but very busy in season. That could be an issue to affect fun.

Alps has a lot to offer the driver, but more challenging than fast driving.

Do I recall that you did a Scotland run a few years ago? North Coast 500, or whatever its called, looks stunning if you haven't.

I enjoy challenging twists and turns more than mega speed driving, so that’s perfect.

I did Wales and Scotland in 2019, NC500 has some nice parts but there was far too much single track which really pissed me off, road being only big enough for one car and driving through blind turns and over hill crests means you can only go probably 30 miles an hour in anticipation of slamming on the brakes. That’s not fun.

Wales is heaven on earth for driving, my favourite so far, I went 2018, 2019, and going again this year. It’s become a yearly pilgrimage

So yea, twisty well surfaced road and little traffic are the key things.
