I'll be bringing it back to Conlans after 1000 miles for an oil change and general check up so will ask them to cut open the filter.
I don't know why one would change oil and not the filter. Doesn't really make sense.
The new engine comes with a 2 year BMW warranty. I inquired about getting a warranty on it about a year ago and I was told that the car was too old and they wouldn't do it despite the mileage being very low.
On another note, I got the car back yesterday and she's driving like an absolute trooper. Feels much more lively now that all the carbon has been removed from ancillaries and the engine is brand new. Huge thanks to Jimmy in Conlans BMW Naas for looking after this for me and also for ensuring the car wasn't washed Very professional guy to deal with and I would highly recommend them.

Will they be dismantling the old engine to find the root cause of the spun bearing ?
Oil supply problem, incorrect grade oil, faulty bearings or simply too long service intervals ?

No Big H, they said that if it was a brand new engine they would look into it but for some reason it won't be happening on my old one. I'd say they know what the issue is but won't let the cat out of the bag therefore it's my opinion that the long service intervals are to blame.
Given the fact that the goodwill came through pretty quickly and no questions were asked (of me at least) about any modifications (which there aren't) they know that they are at fault be it any of the reasons you gave above.
I also confirmed with them whether or not my doing more regular oil changes myself would affect the warranty and I was told that as long as BMW parts (oil filter) and correct oil spec is used and I have receipts to prove this then all will be fine. I don't do big mileage but a yearly oil change will be on the cards whether it's by BMW or by myself/mechanic.
