    F30 330d Engine Calved

Hi folks, it's been a while since I've posted here so I thought I'd return with this gem...

On the motorway going to Naas to view an M4 last Saturday week and my passenger and I hear a knocking noise from the engine. Got off the motorway at the Naas exit and as we neared our destination it got louder. As it turned out, the engine spun a bearing which in turn caused another 2 to go. Luckily Conlans were right beside our destination so I left it with them and they pulled out and stripped the engine and the car has been sitting there since that day and requires a new engine.

Conlans have been very good to me by giving me a nice enough courtesy car and have done the goodwill application. BMW are covering 80% of the cost of the new engine under goodwill which leaves me with a bill of north of €5k for the remaining 20% and the labour.

The car had only covered 67,000 kms, has a full BMW service history (no independent servicing at all) and is in very good condition for a 2013.

Has anyone here heard of this happening to the N57 engine before?

    Thanks!

Wow, that is unlucky. How many oil changes since new?

Valdas seems to have repaired a few alright:

I'm not sure of the oil changes but any and all servicing was done on time by BMW.

The only thing is, the standard service intervals are quite long. Although I have the M57 engine, I usually aim to change the oil every 10k km.

They sure are quite long. I didn't do any servicing in between for fear of BMW using it against me if anything like this happened.

Was the car remapped? It seems like awful bad luck but as the same time you are also lucky they are offering 80% goodwill on a 7 year old car.

    No, it wasn't remapped.

7 year old car yes but with below-average mileage.

That's a bit shit, really. Does the car have a full main dealer history?

Official service schedule intervals are too long, and more frequent changes are something I subscribe to in practice. Having said that, BMW have determined that the extended intervals are their official position and BMW has marketed itself as a premium product, then a catastrophic failure at 67k km's is unacceptable if it has been maintained according to that schedule. If the car has a full main dealer history then honestly I'd expect more of them in terms of goodwill.

If the history is full, but not main dealer then what they've offered is probably reasonable. The figure of €5k for labour and consumables is hefty though, I would have thought. Have they broken that figure down at all?

I agree its well below average. It's just as well it wasn't remapped or they'd try wriggle their way out of it.
