E36 Driven From Dublin To Sydney

Given the day that’s in it and everything else going on, I thought back to the E36 saloon, a 92/93 registered car, that was driven by a group of lads from Dublin to Sydney around 2003. I think it was a 318, dark red with grey cloth interior and manual gearbox but can’t remember for sure.

They had a website, long gone, www.dublintosydney.com, that documented the whole thing. When they brought it back home, BMW Ireland ran a promotional campaign highlighting the benefits of a used BMW. The lads even showed the car in Murphy & Gunn or Maxwell Motors at the time.

I couldn’t find anything about it online when I searched today. Was anyone on here involved or know what happened to the E36?

It was a superb achievement, hard to believe it was nearly 20 years ago.

One of the guys, Annesley Barker, worked with me in M&G. He is still in the trade, has a garage in Sandyford. Really nice guy.

Annesley Barker sold me my 1996 E36 323i coupe in August 2001 96 D 55533. It was a BMW approved used car from Maxwell motors. It must have been just before the trip.

    Glad to see the 316i (93 D 7179) is still on the road......Sadly the 323i (96 D 55533) is not.

    Great story.

Found out a bit more on this, the guy who owned the E36 and who did the website/diary was Simon Collins.

Thought there might have been something on Driver about it at the time but maybe it pre-dated that.

I remember that old Girl Nick. A road worn up the M1.
