    The Boredom Challenge

    Might help pass some time...

    Budget: 5k

    Challenge:
Buy two cars, each with a different purpose. Or one that can manage to do both.
Let's try to stick to BMW's, but also offer your alternative if you have one.
Must have an NCT. Use any source to show what you've found; DoneDeal, Carzone, etc. For the sake of the challenge you can look in the UK but the chances are the NOx charges will kill any chance of importing it, but it can be used an example of what might appear on our shores at some point.

    Car 1
One that you'd gladly take for a hoon through the twisty backroads, a mountain pass or that you could sprint to the shop for a litre of milk and a loaf of bread

    Car 2
Can manage day to day tasks of ferrying around 5 people, 2 suitcases and do reasonable MPG

    Or the Brucey Bonus
The unicorn that can do both tasks fairly well; given that this will be a single purchase and as such only one road tax bill, the MPG criteria is waived!

5k wont buy these, but say along the links of, Car 1 a Z3, Car 2 a 330d Touring, Bonus Car an E39 540i

And lets make the assumption that the chosen cars don't need 20k thrown at them to be right!

5k budget is for both cars, or 5k each?

5k total...either for 2 cars or one that will do both well.

It's a challenge and may not be possible (needing NCT); be too easy with a 10k budget

    Car 1:
I'm going to assume that you'd get this for 4grang given the pandemic (and then drive it on yellow plates)

Car 2: I'll give you a grand for the touring! :-)

E1k on a 1.7 Ford Puma. Don't laugh, they're a hoot as confirmed by Tiff Nedell! (yes, I have one and extremely biased!)
    E4k on an E60 520d or E90 320d (Touring for extra credit).
Unicorn E60 530i, keep a few quid in the back pocket for repairs!

Agree - wife had one for a few years and it is possibly pound-for-pound the best handling FWD car ever built - it was a riot.

Very few 1.7's left (the engines are frail enough) and any €1k ones will be rust buckets - that's what has killed off most of them from our roads (rear arches & sills notoriously bad).

If you find a well maintained, rust free 1.7 for a grand, I'll take it in a heartbeat. There was a Puma Racing local to me for a few years (garaged and rarely out), but it sounded great when he opened the taps - little could keep with it in the twisties - a very underrated car indeed !

Remove one letter in the last word and it explains where they all went
