Jaysus don't get a 520d, mine was a premium selection one with warranty (thankfully) and every possible thing that could go wrong, went wrong over the 3 years I had it. Get a new Seat or something if its gonna be used for ferrying kids around etc

I can confirm that while she wont need this option, you'll be very glad on the few occasions that you have to drive it. They get down the road fairly well for what it is.

This generation of X3 is pretty nice looking actually, massive improvement over the first iteration!

Herself has categorically refused any “coffin cars” so tourings are well and truly out. She’d love a 4x4 but I’m more drawn to an e60, especially a 530/535d. Part of me is thinking to look for one that’s well sorted mechanically but needs a polish/headlight restoration, wheel refurb etc (but no rust or rot) and practice detailing/polishing on it, maybe get some new wheels for it and enjoy that side of car ownership with it.

The e60 is a strange one in that regards. I think they look very well in MSport trim and wouldn’t do any external mods to it (with the exception of the eibach springs but that was a necessity at the time and wasn’t planned )

From experience, the E60/E61 is a great car as long as it has a six cylinder engine. As soon as you go four cylinder, the smoothness and refinement is gone, It becomes noisy and agricultural and cheap. I never understood the dislike for the E60 until I owned the 520d.....saying that, that’s most peoples experience of the E60! Don’t get me wrong, the N47 in the 520d is a great little work horse of an engine, but you’re waiting for the inevitable! The current family E61 is 2010 with 62k miles, in great condition and has never given a days trouble. But when it does....it’s getting a bullet!

    Can’t beat a 535d e60 for an everyday car

Was due to be moving mine on this year but the nox tax ruined that idea ...

Had a 2013 X3 in the family a few years ago which coincided with a new baby at the time. Very nice car and it ticked boxes for hauling buggies and so on.
