    Budget 2020

There are some vague comments so far regarding VRT increasing, but its not clear if that's on the back of a change in rates, or the fact that WLTP standard emissions figures tend to be higher than the equivalent NED figures.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a more significant change in road tax. A fairly modest increase in the highest emissions category seems to be the only hit. Last change was 2016 I think.

Any comments, or further detail, please add.....

A mention that NOx levy will increase for higher emitting vehicles - no mention of what the threshold is to be regarded as "higher", though I suspect that anything diesel and pre-EU6 compliant will be the target..

So it looks like the old cc (pre '08) based motor tax system has been left unchanged - that's a relief in one way.....

Of course I'd like to see it reduced to reflect the value of most of these cars - it's still a grossly unfair system that alloys a brand new €140k+ Range Rover PHEV to only pay €170 annual motor tax......

Link to a useful article outlining the new road tax and VRT bands.

Not entirely sure which motorists that completecar think the budget was tough on - but all things considered I think motorists got way very lightly.

Agreed. I sent details of a couple of cars to my brother in the UK last night so that he might be able to look at one or two for me, but suggested he wait until after the budget, just in case. Two are in what has been the €750 road tax, and corresponding VRT, band and I was a little worried they might take a significant hit. Maybe they're showing some intent for future years, but I'd consider the hit on these to be modest. Still a long way to go to cost what the CC based cars are costing.

Having said that, I can't quite shake the feeling there could be another shoe to drop....... There is a mention in that article about an uplift on imports to bring them in to line with WLTP emissions, but not clear exactly clear what the context of that is.

Pre 2021 cars will have their Co2 emissions converted into a WLTP equivalent I think - theres a formula published for it. So I'd imagine you'll be using that for paying VRT, but then paying tax on either the CC or Co2 based tax system - which is similar to how an 2000 car would currently pay VRT based on its Co2 but then be taxed on CC. Then all 2021 registered cars will be on WLTP VRT and Tax.

530e VRT rate is cut in half from the looks of things too - from 14% to 7%.

I think at some point in 2018 there was change in co2 certification, instead of blanket value per model each spec combination was assessed individualy. Some newer 530s for example on 20" wheels may be above 50g/km.
