    BMW M57TU2D30 2.5d-3.0d chain problems

Somebody said these never fail :hehe!: Its not so many of these engines around and they dont have big mileages yet ,so these problems not so very open on the public, but very popular in countries who do much bigger mileages in general ,so people thinking that 150k mls or over is something scary, they need to check mileages cars do in Germany ,but this time not about this
Last week we got E60 525d 2008 ,i cant guarantee that mileage is real, but clocks shows 180k km, with non start problem :hehe!: owner had some diagnostic scanner and tried to fix car him self :surprised: was fault that cam sensor is faulty ,of course it was ,becouse camshaft wasnt turning at cranking time so ECU thinks that engine is ok,crank is turning and as camshaft sensor cant see cam speed, its faulty cam sensor .He fitted new part, same story ,checked fuel and other things ,when he gave up ,he brought it to us .After first engine turns we investigated chain fail-its broken !!
So engine was out ,cylinder head out ,to check valves for damage as very often they can be bent ,but sometimes they do survive .first check can be not 100% of their condition ,so its better to take out head ,strip valves and check for damage .this time two rockers damaged, two valves bent and two lifters ,as they get enough stress at time when rocker brokes .lot new parts came in ,chains ,sliders-guides ,tensioners, slider bolts, cam gear ,high pressure pump gear, crank gear ,crank front seal, chain cover gasket , valves, rockers, hydraulic tappets ,vales skimmed, valve stem seals, head skim ,new head gasket ,rocker cover gasket ,injector washers ,turbo boos hose O rings and gaskets ,full engine service kit with oil and coolant ,gearbox oil top up ,inlet manifold gaskets ,some turbo oil feed bolt O rings -gaskets ,oil return O rings -gaskets ,engine sump gasket new head bolts and maybe something more i forgot . Now car is back in one peace and running perfect again ! owner said that he do wasnt happy with engine sound ,but his friends said that it sounds perfect as its diesel so he never worried again about this and this happened ,now he can enjoy it and be sure this problem is fixed now ,thanks for Your time and heres some pictures of this work in Motor Confidence garage

Holy crap Valdas that's some amazing work, well done. That's a new one on me I had not heard of this issue on the six cylinder before. Thanks for the write up.

That's some load of work Valdas, fair play.

How much did that all cost out of interest?

Small update , the guy wanted to get its full history ,so went to dealer to get its new service book stamped as original was missing .Car had very good and long history with one of main dealers AND :smiling: the last stamp was made with very close to 400k km mileage ,so it was real mileage and one of reasons why chain failed

Hi Valdas. My 2004 530d has done 190k miles and is on its first chain. I'm undecided between keeping her and throwing a few quid into her or selling her and getting something newer. She is running quite well for her mileage if not a little down on mpg but still pulls like a train. So far we've replaced her turbo, exhaust manifold, crankshaft pulley and associated belts, battery, both thermostats, shocks and springs, freshened most of her suspension parts, deleted her egr, dpf and cat plus had her remapped and finally had her gearbox serviced. She has all her service parts done when she requires them and on time. If I was to keep her for the next few years what would you recommend be done to her from a preventative maintanence perspective? I'm not talking about throwing money into her for the sake of it more so putting money into her to keep her running as best we can. Thanks Valdas 😉

So it's old engine U have ,these not common for chain fail .

Other day seen E92 335D 2008 with broken chain ,full service history ,can't really remember the mileage ,but think it's not more as 130-140k Mls

    Thanks Valdas!

So at the age/mileage of the car what preventative maintenance work would you recommend we carry out that we haven't already?

    Cheers
