    Lightbulb New Car!!!

    Hi all,

I'm moving to the country come November and I'm in a bit of a pickle about a decision about the next car!

I'll be commuting from Kilkenny to Citywest everyday, which equals to roughly 38K miles a year door to door. Sounds like madness I know, all things considered its an hour each way, it used to take me and hour to go 7 miles to Clontarf

Now...onto the important stuff! What do I get!

Its has to be sub 20K miles --- and budget will be 30K +. I have to have it for five years, I'll be buying on credit, with deposit, but not HP or PCP, and I don't think residuals matter considering the end mileage. I'm viewing the five year ownership as a total cost if you follow me. It has to comfortable, fast and decent to drive. But I'm bored of having a daysul car!!! Here's where the dilemma comes in:

    • Do I get a cheap cruiser and get a fun (petrol) weekend car? ie (120d and E46 m3) --bear in mind I'll be spending a lot of time in the former.
    • Go balls out and get a good cruiser, ie. F10 535d or 530d, or 430d/435d, be comfortable and wait for things to change? 640d fits the bill but are still strongly priced.
    • Or option 3, the man maths option! Get a M135i or M235i

Last option sounds nuts, but my calculations are as follows:

    430d -- Expected MPG on Motorway 50MPG -- Over 38K = €4313, assuming diesel is @ €1.25/L
    235M -- Expected MPG on Motorway 35MPG -- Over 38K = €6554 assuming petrol is @ €1.35/L

Difference is 2.3K per year, but I wouldnt have the additional cost of a second car, and I'd assume the 1/2 series is cheaper to service too. But I'd worry the petrol engine probably isn't up to that mileage, where as the diesel is designed for it.

    Advice please?

Best of luck, BTW, hope you get to start work early and leave early too. Its an hour from M9 junction to Citywest Mon-Thurs alone, and not too far off on the way back either. Ive given up and am selling up in Monasterevin and moving back to Dub because of it, its that bad

Will be leaving at 0600, starting at 0700 and bailing out at 1530. Oh I'd did it before at 0900 to 1730 for six months and it was a disaster!

Why not keep the 335d and run it into the ground and pick up something fun for mid budget....very tidy E46 M3

That also crossed my mind, it owes me nothing and I've invested a good bit (more than I care to admit) in it.

Okay ... Option 4. Run current car into the graveyard and get a really fun weekend car instead

EDIT: Just to add to this, this route is an obvious choice, but considering the current mileage (110k), will it fulfill my needs? Or would I be better ditching what ever equity I've left in the E92 and getting something for the long term?

M135i is a great cruiser/mile muncher and does 30mpg all day long.

    Man Maths wins every time.

Problem is, its a rabbit hole, 3/440i also could be a contender using the same logic!...... now I lost a half hour looking at performance exhausts

I think it'll all come down to budget. A sub 20k mile 530/330/430 is going to cost a good bit more than €30k, it'll be closer to €40k I would think.

If you buy a 20k Mile car now and keep it 5 years it'll have 220k+ miles on it and will be worth very little. Given that there is about 120k miles (iirc) on the 335 now and it is in good shape does it not make sense to run it for 2 more years until it hits 200k and then replace?

Now that all goes out the window if you want a new car. In that case I'd go for a 330d/430d.

I reckon keep the 335d and run her into the ground! I'm commuting everyday from Kilkenny to Dublin City..but it's a little easier for me as I get the train
