    That sounds more like a transponder issue - not sure you could activate / deactivate keys on an E36

    When you say spare I’m guessing it’s an older key, possibly the original? Wouldn’t worry it would be as Ken says a fault with the keys transponder

    Might be possible to re-code it. I had a load of spare transponders, and software, for doing VW keys - I'm guessing similar exists for doing BMW keys. Some of the key cutting places might be able to do it.
