Looks like they're building out an online feature for the declaration of non use.

Thats good to see - I think its a pretty fair system, so this will make it slightly easier to manage. Am always worried that the letter goes missing in the post when I contact them.
+1 I thought no way would I send it by post, just wanted the peace of mind in the knowledge that it's done! So off to the Motor Tax office I went, where I Q'd for the best part of an hour on a work day...Originally Posted by kdevitt

Great news, the declaration was not an issue for me but the hassle of the form & the risk of no response was worrying. I sent mine in 3 weeks early by post & got a response within 3 days. That was pretty efficient.
Now if you could renew your tax online after a period of non-use that would be class! I hate the queue in the Motor Tax office!

Happy days! I registered it through An Post just to be sure as it went at 3:30pm on the final day
What happens if you want to put the car back on the road sooner then the period you declared it off the road??
Just walk in and tax it and that'll cancel the SORD.Originally Posted by ChrispyFish

No - if its been declared off the road, no tax is due.Originally Posted by John_D
Minimum non use period must be 3 months, so if you tax it on the 3rd month you pay for the previous 2 months as well. That is my main issue with this whole thing.
If you declare it off the road for 6 months or a year, if you tax it on the 5th month for example, you don't backpay anything (once you passed the 3 month marker).
I don't think so?Originally Posted by E36
The minimum off the road declaration is 3 months, but you can cancel it after a week if you want.Originally Posted by Motortax.ie
