fuel pump problem
I'd be looking at an immobiliser issue e36? Weather for them my car is acting up also. Symptoms? Fuel pump is clearly labelled fuse wise and realy is top left iirc

It needs to prime only when needed so yes it would. What are the symptoms of car not starting?

fuel pump problem
The connection might just be weak causing it to run lean/not at all ? I saw a video on YouTube about it (p plater mods is the Chanel name) it sounds pretty similar to your problem they just added an extra wire to carry a 12v current hope this helps
