I used a flat head put it between the two small bolt heads on the pump to start it turning, 32mm spanner and a hammer its a left thread so opposite way to open
All presuming the viscous fan is the same on m52 as m54
great idea will try it at first light thanksOriginally Posted by Gar

Sorry just in my post above i wrote start its meant to be stop
I bought the tool on eBay for around €30 delivered. Excellent quality. Makes life very handy. But then I do have 3 cars that require it to change the water pump. M44, M50, M52.
I have to change the gasket on the timing chain cover on one of my M43's so I'll be on the lookout for the special tool that allows me to loosen the crank pulley.
I believe there's a way of doing it with a trolley jack and leverage but I'd rather get the tool as I'll probably have to do it to the other M43 during some part of it's life!!
Hi Steve, I have the two special tools for this job. Give me a PM & you can borrow them.
Current Garage:
e36 Convertible, e63 M6,F82 M4, R53 Cooper S, F57 JCW, R53 JCW GP1, Porsche Panamera, Porsche 991 C4S
If it's the same setup as a m54 I use a long 32mm spanner an a big hammer works a treat every time
