One of the keys that came with the MIL's 116i had a flat battery die to non use. We used @[Gar]'s trick of leaving it on an electric toothbrush stand overnight to charge it back up and now it starts the car so it's still coded properly.
However, the buttons won't control the central locking. I assume it just needs to be programmed to the car. Does anyone know they procedure to program a rectangular key? I've inly ever done it with an old fashioned e39 style key.

Not familiar with this car can you turn the ignition to position 1 or does the key just pop in and you press start
Check the fuse is well john

Do any of the keys work ?
It might be a blown fuse or some broken wires in to the tailgate. Two items worth checking & easy to do.

Yes, 1 key works perfectly. This is the key that the previous owner used daily.
The dodgy key is the spare that sat in the drawer for the last 6+ years.

Surely that'd only be the case of both keys were affected? One key works 100% perfectly so I think it's just the spare key.
