RE: Remap or chip
Sending off the ecu seems to be popular. I'm looking at getting mine done soon but want it on a dyno. As only way to show results and get a custom tune to your car not just a generic map.
Technically you need a chip and a map from what I've read as they can't remap the standard chip they have to swap if for a mapable one

D ecu's are different on the m52's and m50's.
Did you not put a nonvanos m50 2.5 into the car?

Either will only be as good as the mods supporting it. Eg injectors, manifolds, exhaust etc. Do both

Dave Hawe down in cork has done a couple of ecu's for me. Made a noticeable difference to the car. Send him a pm on Driver. DaveMsport.
