    starters

    will a e36 323i starter fir a 325i? since both have a 228mm clutch/flywheel assembly

    Most petrol starters on BMW are same e36 E46 e39
    Even 4 cylinder ones

    even between say a 323i and a 328i since the clutch and flywheel are for 240mm? all flywheel ring gear just the same and the canter machined differently ?

    The early e36 had a slightly different type of mounting bolt set up, with boots on the outside of the motor, it then switched to threaded holes in the motor housing. There's one bolt that is meant to be a pain in the ass to take in/out.

    I've had a replacement starter motor ready to go on to my e36 for the last two years but I have put off doing the job loads of times!

    Should fit fine. I have a e36 m52b28 starter on my e34 m50b20
