Edit: Being smaller, do 4 cyl engines have enough room to do the job without fan removal? No mention of this step in the Pelican DIY below:

Removing the fan makes life a lot easier and will shorten the time taken.
EDIT : Apologies just seen this is questions is related to E46's... Bloody E36's on the brain.

What engine is it? from memory n42 is electric fan no need for spanner if m54 then the viscous fan will have to come off
