    The appreciators

With certain cars on the up I thought this thread would be appropriate while the e46 csl has almost doubled and the obvious e30 m3 tripling or even quadrupling in price lets look at the few who have literally no ceiling anymore

Il get the ball rolling with two of my personal long time favourites and two that have climbed greatly in value over the past few years

The beautiful nsx and the beastly 22b

E36 m3 is certainly going to sky rocket in the coming years , very hard hard to find a good clean example with soild service history. I'm seeing more and more of them being broken for parts. It's shame really.

Hopefully it's not a bias but I think the v10 M6 will also be a future classic, that's if the plastic parts don't disintegrate as is the expectation of modern cars! Why do I think it's a future classic?:

    1. Produced in smaller numbers than the e30 M3.
    2. Last naturally aspirated ///M car.
    3. It's a v10, the only v10 BMW.
    4. BMW's 2nd attempt (after M1) to produce a super car alternative (€170k car new).
    5. The "ugly" styling is a bit iconic.

I'd agree with you on that Mark. The 2 M6's for sale at the moment in Beshoff's seem fantastic value when compared to the E90/2 M3's for sale in Ireland and you'd imagine the only way the price will go on them is up. For a long time I've been trying to talk myself into buying one as it's always been a dream car for me. After reading all the troubles you've had though and the c.€15k worth of warranty work you've had done, I just think I could never buy one (without a warranty). My M3 can be expensive enough at times, but the M6 just seems to be a different league.

I think the bubble may burst on some of the M cars which are appreciating.

Its a rat race started by the e30 m3 and its other homologated predecessors. The newer M cars are just full fat cars with throttle bodies with no racing heritage as such.

As the ///M division no longer make an inline six cylinder naturally aspirated engine, and probably never will again, any M car with this configuration will be desirable in the future. This was the M division's signature engine and with the advent of turbo powered engines any N.A. inline six with an M badge will be the engine to have.

E28 M5...................Already on it's way up and it is now too late for many who hoped to buy one.
E24 M635 CSi..........Grab one now, for some reason they have lagged behind the other early M cars, but they will go up.
E34 M5 3.6 and 3.8. Still cheap, prices are firming up slowly, The scrapping cull has ceased and cars are now being restored as prices rise.
    E36 M3 3.0 and 3.2. As per the E34 M5.
E46 M3..................Good cars already commanding strong money, hanging off the coat tails of the CSL. Lesser cars will rise in the future once the rust buckets have been scrapped.

    E30
Any E30 BMW. These have a growing cult following as they are great cars. The most desireable engine will be the six cylinders. 325i followed by the 320i. The most desireable bodies will be the convertible, followed by the 2 door and the Touring, lastly the 4 door. The most desireable gearbox will be a manual.

The 318is and the S14 powered 320is deserve special mention as these cars will have their own following. The S14 powered 320is has already gone very expensive, dragged up by the E30 M3. The 318is will be the one to watch.

Any 325i manual gearbox convertible/Touring/ 2 door and the 318is are the cars that IMHO will have the greatest price gains in the future.

    E36
I think the E36 is now being recognised as a classic, the same can be applied as above to the E36 but the E30 will always command stronger prices.

    Non BMW
Early Porsche 928's.....starting to go up already.
Mercedes 190E Cosworth 2.3 and 2.5. Going up slowly but still under valued.

I tried to convince my brother in law to buy an NSX-R back in 2004 when he was looking for a toy. There was one available in the UK at the time for around stg£55k iirc. I also tried to talk him in to a 360 Spyder that Des Cullen had at the time. These didn't pass the "Could I drive it through the streets on my town" test. He bought a new 645 soft top instead. In the meantime they moved town and obviously the i8 passes the test for where they live now!

One interesting thing with the e36 is that nikasil killed a lot of the 6cyl cars far earlier in their lifecycle than in other 3 series generations, and before they got so cheap that were worth more to break. Trying to find nice, modest mile, good provenance e36 6cyl's is hard work these days.
