Probably! If not stung, then there is the potential for the element of surprise that could spoil a deal for you.
There is a method that you can use to try and get an approximation of the value, and hence VRT. If you look at FAQ 4 on the link below it will take you to a pdf doc. If you go to section 8.3.1.2 it gives you a bit of background. Appendix 4 on the doc is a template of the form they use and Appendix 5 is a worked example. It does require some access to UK trade prices and is a bit convoluted but a couple of links below might be useful on the valuations side.
