Thread: Not really a daily... My E39 M5

    My E39 M5

So, as you may have figured out gang, I've taken on what's commonly referred to as "DonalM's" M5. For quite some time, I've wanted what I would call a "proper" car, with a proper donkey under the bonnet. You know, something with lots of cc, ridiculous to tax, stupid mpg and glorious to listen to. I missed out on young Mr. M's S4, then a friend's 911, then an Rs2 Audi..... And then the young Kilkenny fella stuck up his for sale ad.... And the rest as they say is history.

To quote DonalM, as he worded it better than I could
"I dont know how to explain it. That sense of excitement, proudness, maybe even love for want of a better word.

You know the type of car, a car that if someone offered you more than you paid for it you still wouldn't sell it.

I think I've finally found it....

Meet my E39 M5 in carbon black.

It's got 400hp, a stonking V8 up front and all that grunt goes straight to the back wheels."

It's a long time since I've had a car that when walking away from it, I turn back to look at it before I'm gone too far.

For now, all I want to do is enjoy it, while bringing it to tip top working standard, ironing out whatever niggles and foibles it has.

I want to express my appreciation for Dave's knowledge and advice regarding things M5, I learnt more from this man in one phone call than nights online.

Not great pics but you get the idea. Paint was in need of correction, I'm only a novice at detailing, but after badgering Detailing Shed Dave for advice, I spent a full week of nights at it and it's fairly reasonable now.
    Wash with 2 buckets
    Detar
    De-iron
    Wash with APC
CarPro Fixer on a Velvet orange peel removal pad
Fixer on a firm foam pad
    CarPro Reflect on medium pad
    Remove oils
CarPro Essence on a soft pad
    Finish with ODK Glamour.

Go to physio to get my arms and back working again..

Once all the shiny stuff was attended to, my oils and filters had arrived.
    Mann's finest for ;
    Oil filter
    2 air filters
    Fuel filter
    2 pollen filters

    Millers CFS 10W60 engine oil

RedLine MTL 75w80 GL4 plus RedLine Atf D4 for gearbox

Castrol Syntrax 75w140 LS for the differential.

All old fluids drained, and left draining for ages, with a tin of BG EPR oil flush before changing the engine oil.

Combined with the new plugs, a Tin of BG 44k fuel treatment, it's driving sweeter, smoother, and changing gear nicer.
Change is still stiff when cold, but lovely after a few minutes. Bear in mind Donal put in the Short shifter.

Great to see that this went to a home where it's being minded and refreshed to it's full potential.
