    E60 530d v 535d

    I need your input lads.

The plan is around the end of February is to go on the hurt for a new daily. Its a toss up between a 530d or 535d LCI. I'm currently driving a LCI 520d and it will be the last aha.

What are the 535d in particular like to run? Economy, common faults, insurance etc?

Previously had a 330d and a 525d so I'm pretty familiar with the engines, far superior to the 520d I have now.

    Any input appreciated.

Had a couple of 530d E60’s and they were a really good car with nice power coupled with a decent engine noise for a diesel. Then I got the 535d and it was Car I kept the longest. Immense power and the surge of torque kept my entertained for a couple of years. If I had the choice it would be the 535d. I can’t really comment on any issues as they were fairly new cars when I had them so no problems. Driving around town and like a loon the 535d would give 26mpg. Add in more country drives and maybe mid to late 30’s. Always a thirstier beast than the 530d.

Well given your car history if you kept it the longest that really says it all doesn't it

That really seems to be a general consensus on economy, I know they apperently have endless amounts of power of torque but doesn't seem to be a great figure.

Have read the gearboxes/TC will give trouble on the pre LCI, while the LCI engines are supposed to have more chain trouble? Hard for me to believe, I personally have never heard anybody with a 6 pot diesel chain to fail.

There isn't anything really at 08+ plus for sale in the republic at the moment either to even base where the markets at.

I know they can be a money pit but I'm really gonna hold out for a good clean example with low miles. I can't drive anything only a BMW tbh and the 5 series ticks all the boxes for me really.

Do you have any details valdelis? Although I'm really not in the position to purchase at the moment.

I have my 530d over 2 years now and it’s been pretty much bullet proof. It’s some motorway cruiser and at present I’m averaging 44mpg. Plenty of power for what I need. I can’t comment on the 535d as have never driven one but I’m sure it’s pretty immense - for a diesel that is.go for one with a decent spec. Mine doesn’t have nav and it has the shitty analogue climate control which really ages the interior. I’m looking to upgrade both if I’m holding on to it.

The E60 530d/535d had the M57 engine for it's entire life span so there should be no issues with the timing chain. The engines didn't change to the N57 until the F10 arrived in 2010 which is the one with some timing chain problems. I'd go E60 LCI if you can as it got the newer and smoother ZF gearbox. Seems to still be bit of a premium for a 535d over a 530d but if both cars are like for like (condition and spec) then I'd pay a little more for the 535d. I have an F10 530d myself and love the car but sometimes I do think I should have went for a 535d.

I had both I preferred the 530d. Good bit better mpg and didn’t really see a whole lot different in power.
