Mercedes 190E Cosworth 2.5 16V project -back to life
Another German engineering history -Mercedes 190E Cosworth 2.5 16V bock to life !
Car was of the road for so long time ,but finally owner decided to bring it back on the road and back to its glory .
So our job mission was to make it road worth
First problem was ,very bad cold start and engine won't work well for few minutes ,these engines has old K-jetronic ,mechanical injection system, 4 cylinder engines has 5 injectors ,the fifth one is electric one and works to start the engine ,if it's not working it will be nightmare every morning starting the car .Most common ,faulty relay or so small problem as blown fuse ,this was a problem on this car ,and some air hoses missing their connections ,so this was sorted quite quick and easy .
Interior heater blower motor wasn't working at all ,so first thing was checked motor it self as these common to stick of no use .Motor was removed and was very badly stuck ,I made it turning only by two hands ,so after connected battery and got some spray to make it run easy ,was playing with this for nearly an hour ,only after it start working on its all different speeds .After few bulbs replaced ,some switched stripped abs cleaned to make them work .
Viscous fan wasn't working ,need to strip all its system ,checked all wires ,electric part ,as it works from water temperature switch and controlled by wires ,and works as electro - magnet ,cleaned contacts and this sorted as well
These cars has hydraulic rear suspension ,works from hydraulic motor which is fitted in front of cylinder head and is running by camshaft ,there is level sensor on back axle and gets car height info from rear anti roll bar and depends on car height valve opens and adjusts back shocks .The car was sitting nearly on the ground then we got it ,so first we filled the system to see is it running and what's wrong with it .Filled the system ,start the car ,back of the car started to lift up ,lifted as should be ,and !!! Heavy oil leak at the back of the car ,one of rusty hydro lines didn't hold the pressure and bursted ,so we knew that it's working and needs only new lines .By the way ,hydraulic system works with rear LSD diff as well ,it's usual LSD diff with 25% lock ,but if it needed will lock up to 100% with help of hydraulic system ,so we didn't want to get rid off hydraulic system and make it with normal suspension .Originsl hero lines cost hundreds ,nearly grand probably if to buy from main dealer ,so we replaced them with copper ones ,these are bigger in size as brake lines ,but are covered by plastic .So all rusty hydro lines ,front to back of the car ,from
Valve to each wheel ,rear and front brake lines replaced by new copper ones .
Next was suspension and brakes .All new brake hoses ,front and rear discs and pads with sensors ,brake -clutch fluid ,handbrake shoes with all new springs and clips ,new handbrake cables .Propshaft middle support bearing and mounting .Rear suspension was in bits ,so complete rear axle was removed - all 4 new subframe mounts ,8 new rear control arms and new bolts ,axle stud bushes - ball joints and new bolts .New camber -caster bolts complete with nuts and eccentric washers .some small bushes ,there arms didn't need to be replaced complete ones .
Front suspension - main middle tie rod ,left and right side track rods ,outer lower ball joints ,front wishbones has eccentric bolts to adjust toe and camber ,some of them was so rusty and don't got out easy ,needed so cutting and drilling ,after new bushes fitted together with new bolts and washers .one of front coil springs was broken ,do we replaced both of them .tightened front wheel bearings ,changed engine oil and filters ,new fuel filter .New tires fitted all around ,tracking done new steel pressed number plates and went back home on its own wheels not as cane to us on recovery tuck .i wish U enjoyed the read a swill enjoy the pictures of done work !
Thanks again for Uour time !
