Possibly true, but my old N47 f10 was diagnosed by BMW at 53k miles - I knew the car from new and it had been the opposite of abused by the owner before me that had it from new. Admittedly, it had gotten to low 40's with servicing at BMW recommended service intervals. I do agree that this is an important additional factor in long term health, but it never said on the display or the handbook "Maybe change the oil more frequently so that the chain doesn't break".
    Current: BMW 530e M-Sport - '17, BMW 630i Sport auto - '07, BMW 325i Coupe - '93, BMW Z4 2.5si Auto - '07, '90 BMW 316i Lux.

Any of the cars I've seen with snapped or stretched chains were all coated in varnish inside the engine which means not being serviced enough. The 3.0s aren't as much of an issue because there aren't many in the road and they aren't under as much stress but the problem is still there.

Agree totally, there only doing what the car (Bmw) tells them to do, i.e service it when requested.

And as regards the N57, yep there also doing it. As said, not as many out there so not as many cases of it.

Anyways, all is not lost, the new Merc 4cyl diesels are doing the exact same with the timing chain in the same location!!!!

Connected to the engine?? Is it a design issue as well as a lack of servicing issue?

Yep it's at the rear of the engine. I'd say it's the same as the Bmw, a combination of design fault and excessive mileage on the service intervals
